Every gram counts when backpacking. And while many modern backpacking tents tip the scales at less than 1 kilo, not all of them are practical to use in the challenging weather of the British mountains.
The Nordisk Telemark 1 weighs in at 770g according to the manufacturers (though it tipped the Trail scales at 834g) and is designed to be a spacious yet lightweight one-person backpacking tent. On first appearances what sets it apart from many of its competitors is the internal room that it provides – it’s not only low in weight but also big on living space.
The Telemark 1 comes in two versions, and the model featured here is the ultra-lightweight (ULW) model, which uses carbon poles. There is also a lightweight (LW) version that weighs in at 830g according to the manufacturers, costs £320, and uses aluminium poles.
The Telemark was easier to pitch than some other lightweight tents I’ve tried. There is just one pole, which has to be slipped through a sleeve around the outside of the flysheet, while at the corners there are four shorter poles that are pre-fitted. The guy lines and four pegging points are well-placed, and this allows the tent to be erected quickly with good tension.
There’s a door on one side of the Nordisk Telemark 1 ULW and this has a double zip, so you can open it from the bottom or top for access and ventilation; and as there’s also a large canopy protecting the top of the door you can leave the top zip open for ventilation without allowing rain to enter the tent. When opened from the bottom, the door can be neatly rolled back and secured without fear of it dangling in the way.
The porch extends the whole length of the tent and has a good width of 40cm at its widest point. The inner door rolls to the top and again is well-secured, and once inside there is a good amount of space, because although the internal height is only 86cm, the room doesn’t slope too steeply toward the ends.

With great living space, an easy pitch and a great weight, the Nordisk Telemark 1 ULW is an ideal tent for solo backpacking.
