The Super Mega UL2 – Mountain Hardwear’s lightest two-person backpacking tent – tips the scales at 1176g, although its packed size is longer than most at 56x13cm, due to the pole system, which features longer poles than other designs. They’re all linked together like a giant skeleton that attaches to the inner tent when pitching, so the inner may get wet in the rain. The extremely thin, lightweight flysheet clips over the top of the inner with some rather neat cord attachments that can be ladder-lock adjusted to tension the tent. The structure is then fairly stable although the flysheet doesn’t meet the ground, so wind and rain may whip under it. The entrance is via a zip on the porch with two pulls, with a further zipaway door leading from the porch into the inner. The porch is very small so gear will be in the way when using this for entry or exit, but the inner tent has good space although the floor is more delicate than heavier tents’. The mesh used on the inner tent, combined with the large gap between ground and flysheet, means the Mountain Hardwear Super Mega UL2 is quite a breezy tent, which is great in warm weather but less appealing in cold, wet or windy conditions.
Flysheet fabric nylon, PU-coated
Inner tent fabric ripstop nylon and mesh
Groundsheet fabric ripstop nylon PU- and silicone-coated
Internal dimensions (LxWxH) 216x135x91cm
Packed size 13x56cm
The Mountain Hardwear Super Mega UL2 weight advantage can’t be denied, but the porch is small and it feels more delicate than other designs in cold, wet and windy conditions.
