MSR Hubba HP 2009

The MSR Hubba HP is a very light and small-packing tent. It’s an inner-pitched-first design with a multi-section, hubbed pole assembly that clips onto the inner very quickly. It’s then easy to move it to a spot you like before you add the outer and peg it down. The groundsheet is very waterproof and although the outer only has a hydrostatic head of 1000mm the silicon-coated fabric sheds rain and snow easily. The inner has mesh vents, handy stuff pockets and a light mesh gear loft at the apex, which is brilliant for storage and placing a tent light. The porch is huge and easily takes all my gear. I can sit upright and cook in the porch, with the two-way water-resistant door zip open at the top to let steam out. The light-coloured fabrics make it bright inside. But the internal compartment is just enough for a mat and sleeping bag, and most of your gear will have to go into the porch. The flysheet does not extend down as close to the ground as others. The water-resistant door zip, although effective, is sticky and does not get an external stormflap. It’s inner-pitched-first too which some might not like.

Verdict: The MSR Hubba HP is a fantastic, lightweight tent. It’s well-designed and well-made, simple to pitch, with features ideal for use on the hill if you don’t mind inner-pitched-first designs.
