The GoLite Xanadu 1 is a small-packing, lightweight and simple tent. Although it’s a single-skin tent it has all the cooking and gear storage advantages of a regular tent, thanks to its huge porch. On the other side it has a large vent that is held open by a guy line giving good through ventilation with the full mesh inner door. GoLite says this is a 3-4 season tent. The shape will shed snow and there are guy points to add stability. It pitches quickly from the inside, and once up there’s enough headroom for me to sit up, and sufficient space for sitting out the rain. Mesh pockets make finding your headtorch or watch easy at 3am. It has a sturdy floor for a lightweight tent, with a good hydrostatic head. But single-skin construction will always have condensation issues inside. Some of the fabric is Epic, which, although highly water-resistant, is not completely waterproof and the seams are not sealed with tape. Although rated for mountaineering and four-season use, the tall shape does attract the attention of the wind. The rain gutter over the outer zip needs a rethink as it doesn’t sit properly over the zip, and the outer zip also lacks a double zip pull so you cannot vent it from the top.

Verdict: The GoLite Xanadu 1 is a great tent if you can live with the minor niggles. Just keep it out of strong wind and heavy rain though.
