Terra Nova Laser 20 (2012)

If you really want to move fast or burn less energy in the hills then weight is all-important – and the Terra Nova Laser 20 is probably the ultimate pack for you. At just 321g it is half the weight of many competitors. It is made from extremely lightweight fabric and has the absolute minimal amount of extra padding on the back to add a modicum of comfort, which means other rucksacks are certainly less clammy than this sack. There is no stiffness at all in the back system, so you have to pack it carefully or risk even more discomfort. The Terra Nova Laser 20 has one main compartment, which is entered via a central water-resistant zip – and in the long term this may not be the most durable component of the sack, so some care is needed as with all zips to make sure they don’t jam or break. There is a useful zipped pocket on the outside too plus the standard mesh stretch pockets and these are all useful. The hipbelt has water bottle carriers and additional small pockets. The sack is very stable, hugs your back and is ideal for fast and light activity when weight is your number one priority.

Verdict

The Terra Nova Laser 20 is an extremely lightweight sack with a minimalist design that is ideal for travelling fast, but if you can tolerate a little more weight you’ll get more comfort.
