This unisex pack comes from a brand who mainly make hydration systems, so it’s built around (and supplied with) a 3L water bladder and hose. This explains the higher prices and weights. Platypus’ approach is to hang the long, rectangular bladder in its own chamber behind the main section. You’d think this might impinge on storage, but no: the main compartment is cavernous and the flat-back system means there’s no compromise on space. The weight of the full load is evenly distributed around the bladder, meaning this is a very comfy pack to carry. The simple back panel is held slightly away from your back by two big pads, but I did feel the heat building up on big ascents. There’s no rain cover, but you get waterproof tape on the zips. Perhaps it’s only right that a pack devoted to giving you water should also be good at keeping it out.
Extra pockets: 4 (top, belt x2, open flap)
