Berghaus Antaeus 45+8

This 41-50 litre rucksack is a reliable all-rounder. The back system can be adjusted in all the usual ways, as well as being lengthened to obtain a more precise fit. There is also a good selection of pockets: a good OS map-sized one on the front of the pack and two compressible side pockets. These are useful as you can flatten them when they’re not in use. Access can also be gained from the base of the pack via a zip opening. Inside there is a zip-out/Velcro divider to allow things to be separated out if needs be. Basically, this ’sack is a good, solid performer. But the side compression straps don’t unclip and have to be unthreaded, which is annoying as they go across the pockets to compress them. There is little else wrong with this rucksack, though there wasn’t much to make it stand out either, making it feel a little ‘samey’. Our independent testing also found the capacity was much bigger than stated.
