Zamberlan Mountain Lite HBS 2009

The Zamberlan Mountain Lite HBS is a very traditional 3-4 season boot that incorporates the classic features that many more mature walkers will have tried, tested and decided are ideal for British hill-walking. It has a one-piece leather upper, which means it is likely to last a long time as there is nothing to fall apart. To make the boot crampon-compatible the upper is stiff so that straps don’t dig into the foot. Also this stiff upper means that the boot can withstand knocks and scrapes without deforming too easily, so it’s ideal for tackling scree. Underfoot there is a classic Vibram Vertige, which has a very deep pattern of lugs and a heel clip for easier crampon fitting. This sole unit is very stiff to make work on snow secure without having to don crampons straight away. But the boot also retains enough flex to make walking comfortable. There is some good cushioning underfoot too, to make long walk-ins comfortable. The traditionalist will love this for year-round mountain walking.  But the main drawback is the weight, as there are lighter boots than the Zamberlan Mountain Lite HBS. Also some boots get a rubber rand for even more abrasion resistance, while others are a little better for scrambling due to them having a closer ‘feel’ for the rock.

Verdict
With enough stiffness for easier snow and ice-covered terrain yet enough comfort for non-snowy terrain the Zamberlan Mountain Lite HBS is a true year-round mountain boot.
