La Sportiva Trango S Evo GTX 2009

The La Sportiva Trango S Evo GTX 4 is a boot with an upper made of mixed materials that helps to keep the weight down. The tongue is well-padded to improve the comfort of the laces too, and so when this is on the foot it feels light and comfortable. There is a waterproof lining to maintain dry feet, and a good rubber rand provides protection for this upper construction when the boot is taken onto the harshest rock and scree of a mountaineering route. The ankle cuff is particularly interesting as it provides support but is also articulated so that it does not restrict movement too much. The outsole is reasonably aggressive and is good for keeping a grip in snow or mixed terrain. The boot can be fitted with crampons that use a heel clip, and the cushioning underfoot makes walking below the snowline comfortable too. This appears to be a good all-round winter boot. But the La Sportiva Trango S Evo GTX has a softer flex than some other B2 boots and so to me it feels more like a stiff 3-4 season boot rather than a proper 4-season boot. The price then sounds high considering this performance. This boot is definitely excellent, but I don’t think it is the best for kicking steps up snow slopes and winter mountaineering through the depths of winter.

Verdict
The La Sportiva Trango S Evo GTX is a superb lightweight boot for use on mixed rock and typical UK winter terrain, but others are better for long days in the snow.
