The Scarpa Trek GTX is a classic boot that is built for tackling Britain’s toughest peaks year in, year out. It has a leather upper that is virtually stitch-free so it is very durable. There is extra reinforcement around the toe box, and the toe box itself is stiffened to protect the toes. A unique feature is the ankle cuff, which is designed to provide extra flex forward and sideways while still protecting the foot and helping to keep grit out of the boot. The sole unit has deep lugs for grip in mud, and plenty of stiffness to make scrambling over rockier peaks both easy and comfortable. The waterproof lining adds extra protection to a boot that is already built to tackle the worst that a mountain can put in front of it. But there are lighter and more flexible boots around than the Scarpa Trek GTX, and if you prefer that sort of boot then this is not for you. Adding a Gore-Tex lining increases the price and perhaps is not needed for all users as the upper is of such good quality. This level of performance isn’t worth having if you are just walking in the valley.
