The Scarpa Mustang weighs in at 1594g (pair, size 46), which is reasonably lightweight. The upper is made from a mix of suede and synthetic materials with a Gore-Tex lining for waterproof and breathable protection. The upper’s fairly stiff, supportive and protective of the foot, making this better than many synthetic lightweight boots for use on rough, rocky ground. In particular the toe box and heel have additional stiffening so these areas provide better support on tougher terrain. There is also an extra overlay of material on the toe for more durability, but you don’t get the full rubber rand or one-piece leather uppers of even more durable designs. Stiffness in the sole is good for rocky ground too, while the lugs on the outsole are deep and well-spaced for grip on loose ground as well as softer mud. The heel breast is nice and aggressive for better braking during descents. There are locking lace eyelets just below the ankle that help tension the lower area of the boot across the forefoot, without impeding forward flex of the ankle cuff. Overall the Scarpa Mustang is a great boot for general hillwalking and it would be ideal for a wide variety of conditions. Lower-priced options may be lighter and more flexible but they may not offer the rockier-ground versatility of the Mustang.

The Scarpa Mustang is a great choice for valley, hill and mountain walking where performance on a rocky ground as well as soft terrain is required. It won Trail’s ‘Best in Test’ accolade.
