The Merrell Chameleon Strap Mid’s ankle cuff is lower than conventional boots but very stiff, so although only mid height it is very supportive. An unusual Velcro fastening coupled with elastic lacing helps kids put these on. The style is very modern too. The lugs have reasonable depth for grip and the toe box is fairly stiff to protect the foot. But the Merrell Chameleon Strap Mid’s outsole is not as deeply lugged as others and there is no heel breast, so I would not expect these to offer the quality of grip provided by some other boots. Also the sole is quite bendy and you can feel stones through it easily, so this may not be the best option for rockier ground.

Used for valley walks on clear paths the Merrell Chameleon Strap Mid would perform well, but others are better for hill-walking.
