La Sportiva Trango Alp GTX 2010

Alp by name and Alpine by nature, the La Sportiva Trango Alp GTX is very much at home in the mixed rock and glacier travel of Alpine Haute Routes, easier Alpine peaks and big mountain routes. The boot has a synthetic and leather upper to help keep the weight down, plus Gore-Tex to keep the feet dry. A full rubber rand protects the boot from scrapes on rock. The ankle cuff is particularly impressive as it is well articulated to allow easy ankle flex. The toe profile is quite narrow, making it ideal for scrambling and mountaineering; and on my thinner feet the fit and comfort were excellent. Underfoot there is good cushioning and a very aggressive Vibram sole unit with deep lugs and an exceptionally deep heel breast for maximum braking downhill. This is an ideal boot for mountaineering and as it is stiffer than most boots here you could use it for quite challenging winter terrain. But as the La Sportiva Trango Alp GTXs are stiffer than most boots they are not quite so comfortable to use below the snowline, when a little more flex in the sole would making walking easier. If these were tested against 4-season boots they’d fare better than here, where we are looking for a 3-4 season boot with good flex to provide easy walking below the snowline and when not scrambling.

The La Sportiva Trango Alp GTX is an excellent Alpine boot when mountaineering on mixed terrain, but others provide easier walking below the snowline on less challenging terrain.
