Hanwag Tatra GTX (2012)

A gorgeous though expensive boot with a broad forefoot and a narrow heel. It’s definitely at its best higher up on the hill on rough or rocky ground, where the reasonably stiff midsole and higher than average ankle cuff come into their own. That said, it’s not a heavy boot, so doesn’t feel too clumsy on lower or easier paths. The nubuck upper is tough and good-looking and is well protected at the toe by a beefy bumper. The lacing’s great, especially the offset locking eyelet which really makes it easy to get a secure feel over the foot; and the Vibram sole is as good as it comes, providing great traction on both rock and mud.
