Ecco Biom Trail FL (2015)

Most of these shoes occupy the crossover world between walking and running, but few more successfully than this one. The Biom is a running shoe that is perfectly adaptable for walking, if you like to be light and nimble. At 384g, it’s lighter by 50-75g than most other walking shoes. Ecco keep almost all their technologies in-house, so this packs in loads of ideas, like a directly-injected PU midsole and a design based around digital scans of 1,000 pairs of human feet. The outsole is reassuringly grippy, especially in mud, and the lack of a membrane means it’s ideal for warm, dry days (although a Gore-Tex version will arrive in the autumn). My one gripe is an annoyingly pronounced ridge running round the inside of the heel, which was enough to give me a nasty rub. That’s a matter of fit, which is subjective – but do check the heel carefully when trying it on.
