The Boreal Aspen is a brightly coloured boot with a good ankle cuff height for general walking plus a waterproof lining to keep feet dry. The outsole has a good, deep pattern of lugs for grip and long-term wear. Importantly the toe box is very firm for maximum protection, and it gets a rubber rand too for durability. But other boots in this test are slightly stiffer in the sole than the Boreal Aspen, which would be of benefit on rockier ground.

The Boreal Aspen is a great price for a well-designed walking boot, although a stiffer sole may help on rocky ground. It won Trail’s ‘Best Value’ award.
