Asolo Alpiniste GTX 2009

The Alpiniste GTX is a new Asolo 4-season boot that provides a superb set of features, making it ideal for general winter use as well as mountaineering. It has a synthetic and leather upper with a big rubber rand for extra durability. The lacing extends further towards the toe than in some boots, which makes it slightly better for climbers as this toe is also a little more profiled than some. The outsole is a good aggressive Vibram unit with good stiffness for winter walking but also a good walking action when you are below the snowline. The ankle cuff is well articulated so that it provides support without making walking difficult. All this is packed into a boot that is relatively light on weight and price. Unlike some other lighter options this manages to retain important winter walking features, making it an excellent all-round performer. But some 4-season boots are lighter and even better for pure climbing than the Asolo Alpiniste GTX. Others have a wider fit at the toe, which may suit walkers a little more than climbers. The extra stitching on the upper may ultimately be a weaker link in the design than a stitch-free upper. But for winter walking and general mountaineering there is not a lot wrong here.

The Asolo Alpiniste GTX is a superb winter boot if you prefer a slightly narrower profile towards the toe, particularly for mountaineering.
