Platypus Big Zip SL 2010

I really like the flexibility of being able to remove the hose from the bladder when you want to refill the Platypus Big Zip SL. It means less time faffing with your pack and makes it easier to refill from streams – which is less of an issue if you’re biking or on short day walks but a real bonus on longer backpacking trips. This hydration system comes with a bite valve that can be easily locked and a clip to keep it in place on your pack. But the key feature is the sliding ziplock opening. Once it is zipped, you can remove the blue plastic top, turn it upside down and there’s no leakage at all. Water tastes great and there’s an antimicrobial treatment to keep your bladder gunk-free for as long as possible. But I was really surprised to find I couldn’t get my hand into the ‘widemouth’ opening to clean the bladder out. This seems to me to be a real shortcoming in an otherwise excellent product.

Verdict
The Platypus Big Zip SL comes a close second to the Source hydration pack and is only let down by the fact that the opening isn’t big enough for easy cleaning, and that it costs £5 more.
