The Compact X is one of the most compact poles out there, with its four-section design, but this does mean it is also heavy. The poles are pleasantly sturdy in use, considering the price, and you can buy them individually if you want a low-cost trial or need to replace a damaged pole. But the grips are disappointing, made from a hard plastic that doesn’t feel pleasant in the hand, and is ripe for causing calluses. The handles are also fairly short. The Compact X has a buckle-adjusted strap, which makes it easy to set the right length, but you have to position the strap carefully to avoid chafing your hand. Taller walkers may find that the poles are not long enough even at full extension.
