The Drinksafe Waterstraw is the lightest filter system available and is extremely well-priced, so it’s ideal for stashing in your rucksack for emergencies. It’s also extremely easy to use, because you simply remove the caps from each end, place one end in the water, then suck through the filter from the other end with your mouth. Once your thirst is quenched, shake the Waterstraw dry and replace the caps: no pumping, no chemicals and no waiting around required. As you’re drinking directly from the Waterstraw it’s worth collecting some water in a container and then using the device to treat it, rather than having to lie head-down on the river bank. You can’t use the Waterstraw to filter and then collect water though, so you can only drink when you’re near a supply, which is a drawback. The Drinksafe Waterstraw has a service life of 700 litres, which is pretty good, but at the end of that time you do need to throw the whole thing away because you can’t just replace the filter as you can with other units. Ideal for travelling light and superb for emergencies.
