GEAR EXCLUSIVE: Is it the end for paper mapping?

No, papermapping will never go. These new fangled disgital maps are great, but they are only a companion to paper mapping.

People need to know how to navigate, and use a map and compass with out problems. These are skills that shoul always be taught.

I can see more rescues happening due to batteries failing (Temperature or charge)

A GPS of whatever description should only be a back up for the real thing - your talent for reading maps and navigating using a compass !!

Batteries fail!  Maps go on and on. 

 No way!!  Never do away with paper mapping.  Sitting in the pub the night before with the maps spread out on the table, all of us with beer in hand plotting our route.  No way can you do that over a GPS unit.  Love paper maps and hiking and planning would never be the same again without them.  

GPS has it's place but for a massive part of the fun side of planning you need that beer stained map
