Re: MSR Reactor vs Jetboil
I've been using a Jet Boil for about a year now, and after our latest trip I started searching for something else and found the Reactor. I immediately bought one, and have sold the Jet Boil. The Jet Boil is pretty good, but the problem is that if there is even a moderate wind and/or low temperature it can take an absolute age to boil water, and sometimes will simply fail to boil any water at all. In anything other than largely perfect conditions, it is not great at all. I had this problem in the lakes once - it was wet, windy and cold - I sheltered the Jet Boil (virtually completely) out of the wind (and whilst it was cold, it was well above freezing), but the water simply would not boil (and it was a new cannister of gas, so no problems with low pressure). The residual cool breeze affected it so much that it failed me. In other conditions, it will boil, but it takes much longer than the stated time.
The Reactor behaves altogether differently - my tests so far have led me to believe that it would outshine (by a considerable amount) the Jet Boil in similar conditions. True, it's larger, but I see that as a good thing as it means I can boil more water, or cook more food in one go. Even if I were catering for one, it would be superior as it would boil the same amount as the JB faster and more efficiently.
It's slightly heavier, but we're not talking much - certainly worth the extra effort and money imo. The JB has the advantage over the Reactor in two (maybe 3) respects as far as I can see. 1 - it has a piezo self ignitor. The Reactor does not, and you'll need matches/lighter etc. Not a big problem, but not as convenient. 2 - the JB's pot attaches to the base which gives it a little more stability, and means you can lift it all around whilst in use to find a better spot for it. At a push, 3 - the JB has a more delicate burner control meaning you can have it simmering fairly easily. The Reactor is a bit more "on/off". It's possible to adjust it (if you're careful and delicate) to get it to simmer, but it takes a little more care.
Overall, I recommend the Reactor over the JB however, even for one person - the additional cost is justified in my opinion.
