Walkers with an eye on history are invited to join the Ramblers for an anniversary mass march on Kinder Scout in the Peak District this weekend.

The walk on Saturday will retrace the route of the original Kinder Trespass, widely credited with kick-starting walkers’ access rights in the countryside, and culminating in our right to roam over open access land. According to Ramblers CEO Tom Franklin, “When the Ramblers first came into being, much of Britain was out of bounds to walkers including 99% of the Peak District.”

The 1932 trespass, when walkers faced up to gamekeepers on the grouse moors of Kinder, brought access rights to national attention, and served as a catalyst for the creation of the Ramblers three years later in 1935.

This year marks the Ramblers’ 75th anniversary, and hundreds of walkers are expected to mark the occasion at Kinder, setting out from Hayfield car park at 10.30am on Saturday April 24th.
