Congratulations to Paul Robinson, whose fantastic film A Special Place scooped this year’s Trail Mountain Movie Award. Paul’s entry focused on Kinder Scout, a hill that really does hold a special place in his imagination.
“I’ve been up many mountains across the UK, but some of the best walking experiences I’ve had have been on Kinder Scout,” he told LFTO. “As my wife says in the video, it isn’t the biggest mountain by any means but there’s just something about the place that makes you want to go back there. In a strange sort of way, it’s a bit like meeting up with an old friend.”
A Special Place aims to capture the mood and atmosphere on Kinder at different times of day. “One of the main challenges in making the film was simply getting the right conditions,” says Paul. “I filmed during a number of visits from late spring to late summer in order to capture the atmosphere in different light. I’d always see something new to film each time.”
But catching Kinder in the right conditions wasn’t the only obstacle that Paul faced during filming. On one ill-fated expedition up the mountain, he found himself being chased through a field by an enraged bull. “I legged it like a headless chicken down a steep hill,” he admits. “Patches of cow pat were difficult to avoid. Suffice to say I ended up in a bit of a mess by the time I reached the stile at the other end of the field.”
It sounds like Paul well and truly earned his prize – an action-packed holiday in the Alps with the Adventure Company. He will be taking advantage of the break to produce another film for LFTO, so watch this space for more news of our talented winner.
