The private papers of author and fellwalker Alfred Wainwright are on sale for £100,000.
Cumbria County Council wants to buy the works, which include photographs, drawings and slides, to make them available to researchers.
The council has made a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund and needs people to write in support of the campaign - The Wainwright Society is already giving its backing.
Wainwright has inspired millions to visit the Lake District with his series of Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells.
If you would like to support the campaign email Peter Eyre from Cumbria Record Office at peter.eyre@cumbriacc.gov.uk
