Trail magazine launched the Homemade Mountain Movie Award earlier this year to find the best amateur hill-walking film talent in the UK.

With almost 100 entries it’s been hard work to narrow down the entrants to just five finalists… but here they are...

Film title: Wild Camp

Film maker: Terry Abraham

Terry says: “After studying a map, I did a brief recce of an area within the Lake District I thought would make a great location. I planned in my mind what shots and angles I wanted, but in the end I just went with the flow. The weather was a particular problem and can be very frustrating, so I had to be patient to capture the video I wanted. But after all the climbing, repacking gear and sitting around, I had hours of footage to view.”

Trail says: “Terry has a real eye for atmospheric shots that take you deep into the moment and drop you right onto the hill. He’s a regular contributor to LFTO, and definitely one to watch.”

Film title: 40 Years on the Scottish Hills

Film maker: James Hughes

James says: “I was always keen to make a film about my dad and his relationship with the Scottish hills. I recall watching Super 8mm footage of his hill-walking trips when I was a boy and thought it would be great to edit the images into a short film. It was great to interview my dad, getting a feeling of the camaraderie between his friends on and off the hills. Trying to make the film under 3 minutes was a challenge as we had lots of footage and it was tough to edit . I really wanted to capture how the hills can have an effect on one’s life. Be it friendship or a sense of peace, there is something there that people have in common and can enjoy.”

Trail says: “A beautifully crafted and very well-focused bit of film-making that definitely taps in to the impact that the hills can have on a walker’s life.”
