Join thousands up and down the country this September and take part in Ride + Stride 2010, the sponsored trek or bike ride that takes walkers on a tour of England’s historic church sites and beautiful countryside.

This year’s event, which will raise money for the conservation of our oldest churches, will take place on September 11th. More than 13,000 walkers across 34 counties are expected to take part.

Cumbrian fell runner Derek Hurton commented, “The aim of the event is for participants to visit as many churches and chapels in a day exploring some of England’s fantastic countryside and at the same time discovering something about these extraordinary historic buildings”.

Over 10,000 churches will be open for visitors to explore on their travels, many with a helpful guide to explain the history of the building. Walkers can plan their own route to suit their ability level and anyone can take part, from those looking for a leisurely stroll with the family to those wanting to run a mountain marathon.

“The route I suggest for more experienced walkers visits Borrowdale Church, Buttermere Church and Wasdale Church. This route is quite rough but all on footpaths or bridleways, it combines the majestic grandeur of the Lake District hills with the quiet, calmness of three small churches”.
