Walkers are being offered the opportunity to brush up on navigation and GPS skills for FREE this spring. Cotswold Outdoor has teamed up with Ordnance Survey to offer the refresher classes for rusty navigators, between March and May.
“Even with today’s technology, the ability to read a map is an essential for everyone from the leisurely walker to the experienced rambler,” says Mike Stevens, retail operations director for Cotswold Outdoor.
The eight sessions will take part in Cotswold Outdoor stores across the UK. They will be split into three sections to cover all areas of mapping a walk.
Session 1: Paper map reading & compass navigation
This includes understanding and interpreting the map, understanding the OS grid, an introduction to the essential parts to the compass, how to select suitable and safe routes across difficult terrain using a map and compass, estimating the walk distance and time, and taking the correct magnetic bearing.
Session 2: Ordnance Survey maps for your PC & GPS
This session will cover GPS and digital mapping, including GPS basics, GPS capabilities, GPS as a safety tool, an introduction to GPS terminology, and the importance of the map page.
Session 3: Q&A
An informal and interactive session with the trainers.
Tickets are free and can be picked up or reserved over the phone at the relevant store. Workshops will be held at:
