In fact members of the International Appalachian Trail (IAT) are about to visit Scotland to discuss this very possibility.
Until recently (in geological terms) the Highlands were part of the great Caledonian Appalachian Mountain Range, but over many millions of years the Atlantic Ocean has split this in two.
Now members are keen to 're-join' these mountain ranges by adding a few hundred miles through Scottish terrain to the already imposing 1,350-mile trail.
The IAT is an extension of the original Appalachian Trail.
It begins where the original ends, in Maine, and runs through several Canadian provinces. |
