The info has come from 1.3 million satellite images and covers 99% of the Earth's surface.

The maps cover more of the earth's surface and are more accurate in areas of steep terrain than anything of this nature before.

The Global Digital Elevation Map has come from a partnership between Nasa and the Japanese trade ministry.
