In the 2009 Eco Guide that came free with issues of Trail and Country Walking, we asked you to give us your suggestions for walking related ways to help the environment.
And the top suggestion from competition entries was for more people to deal with rubbish on the hill, by carrying out not just your own, but other people’s trash as well.
“A good friend of mine has the most humble habit of picking up other people’s rubbish when out walking,” says Neil Newman. “He is motivated by the mantra of leave no trace. With the support of readers we could have a tangible effect impact and might even change the way others treat our environment.”
Andy Braithwaite started out as a surfer cleaning the beaches of rubbish. “I now take a carrier bag out with me to the hills and when I come across any mindless dumping I’ll pick it up and bin it,” he explains.
Other winning suggestions included a walker’s car pool scheme to get to the hills and projects to get kids into walking and the hills.
The overall winner was Neil Newman who picks up a Vango Free Wing 500 and the five runners up (who each get a Vango 15 LED eco lantern) are Jayne Miller, M Alexander, Andy Braithwaite and Angie Polkey.
