A climber who died after falling 300ft down a mountain in the Lake District has been named as Alan Sharples of Lancaster.

Mr Sharples, 60, was fellwalking with his son when he slipped down Sharp Edge on Blencathra on Sunday afternoon.

Members of the Keswick mountain rescue team located Mr Sharples and he was airlifted to Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle by an RAF helicopter.

He died on the way to hospital.

Sharp Edge, a sheer arete leading to Foule Crag, is widely considered one of the toughest scrambling routes in the Lake District.
