Trail’s mountaineering editor Jeremy Ashcroft is warning hill-walkers to beware of avalanches this weekend.

“With all the recent heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures there is potential for avalanches in the hills over the coming weekend. Scotland is covered by forecasts from the Sport Scotland Avalanche Information Service available at www.sais.gov.uk or posted in local information centres, outdoor shops and cafes, and at some key car parks.

There is no such service in England and Wales so it is up to individuals to be aware of the risks and take appropriate action. The greatest danger will be from accumulations of wind-blown snow on lee slopes forming poorly bonded wind slab. Other particularly prone areas will include open slopes in the gradient 25º to 45º, gully amphitheatres and corrie head walls.

If you have any doubt about a slope you should dig a pit to check the snow pack structure. Ridge lines although not without risk offer safer alternatives routes. National Park Ranger Services will be able to provide some information on prevailing conditions and are worth checking out before you head off into the hills.”
