Trail Best Value

Berghaus Roam 30 2009 £45

Berghaus Roam The Berghaus Roam 30’s price of £45 is great value for a comfortable rucksack with ample day walk features. The Roam is also available in both men and women-specific fits (most sacks we looked at are ‘unisex’.) It fits medium-sized backs, and the women’s version has comfy, contoured shoulder straps for a women’s narrower top half. The fabric is robust, but weighs under 1000g. Its simple, comfy, aerated foam back panel with useful, removable sit-mat... Click here for full review and star rating

Kathmandu Nowaki 30L £55

The Kathmandu Nowaki 30L rucksack would suit people with long backs who like to take plenty on day walks. You get 7 litres more than advertised with this long, comfy sack, which is good news if you like a roomier bag for less cash that’s still under 1000g. The robust simplicity of this sack gets it into the final. Despite its unisex fit, the shoulder straps fit a woman’s... Click here for full review and star rating

Vaude Triset Ultralight 35 2009 £55

Vaude Triset Ultralight If you want to go lighter, try this slim-fitting rucksack with a well-vented back. At 775g the Vaude Triset Ultralight 35 is almost as light as the OMM Classic Marathon 32, but features a more complex back system and comfy mesh hipbelt that’s useful if you really can’t bear back sweat. The curved mesh back doesn’t eat into the main sack and feels comfy against your lower back. It’s ideal for shorter backs and smaller bums to fit within the semi-rigid... Finalist

OMM Classic Marathon 32 2009 £60

OMM Classic Marathon The OMM Classic Marathon 32 is a well-thought-out, light, stable unisex rucksack for walkers and adventure racers. It’s not the lightest walking/running sack we tested, at just over 700g, but it is a better design. It fits medium back lengths well, and the shoulder straps flex well around a ladies’ narrower top half. Poles, axes and skis can be secured to the gear loops. A side bungee is good... PodSacs Roc Sac 2009 £60

Podsacs Roc Sack Simplicity, functionality and bombproof fabric with triple-stitched seams make the PodSacs Roc Sac a finalist. This rucksack has a medium length back and shoulder straps to fit a narrower person’s profile, which are stable enough for day walks. The no-frills design weighs in at under 1000g, with useful bungee front storage and side compression straps. The hipbelt is unpadded, but the wide strap means it is comfier for any size of bum... Jack Wolfskin Cross Terra 30 2009 £70

The Jack Wolfskin Cross Terra 30 is a comfy, robust, simple rucksack for ladies (the men’s version is the  larger Cross Terra 36) with a short back length and narrow shoulders. It is packed with features walkers want. This, combined with its specific women’s fit, makes it a finalist. The back length would suit shorter frames and the contoured shoulder straps hug smaller shoulders in a very stable design. The features... Click here for full review and star rating

Black Diamond Speed 30 2009 £80

The Black Diamond Speed 30 is a well-designed rucksack that will see you through summer and winter. However – though it’s light, 1006g design makes a good walking pack – its features are more suited to those at the mountaineering end of the scale rather than hill-walkers. The sleek cut (with no side pockets) and light weight sees to this, with a removable top pocket, hipbelt and back support to make it even lighter for quick summit pushes. Its medium back length and well-contoured straps fit a female frame well... Click here for full review and star rating

Trail Best In Test

The North Face Terra 30 2009 £80

The The North Face Terra 30 is a stable, indestructible rucksack with all the features a hill-walker needs. Although second heaviest in the test at 1756g, it still wins. If you take out the 316g back stiffener and 85g rain cover, it weighs 1355g, which isn’t bad for a bombproof bag with 36 litres of space, extra comfy hipbelt, unobtrusive vented back and more useful features. There are a plethora of pockets and a useful, high-vis rain cover. Pole or axe attachments make the bag useable all year. You wouldn’t run in this, but...
