Gear trade fair ISPO 08, which took place earlier this week, saw the launch of the world's first satellite messenger, SPOT.
The idea is that SPOT gives you a vital line of communication with friends and family when you want it and emergency assistance when and where you need it. Users can check in with loved ones, allow others to track their progress or call for help.
SPOT uses satellite technology, allowing it to work where mobile phones do not, and providing users with a lifeline to receive help at their exact location.
The device has already received global recognition and has been awarded the 2008 Innovations Design and Engineering Award from the Consumer Electronics Association. Now though, it's available to the everyday consumer.
How it works
The simple four-button design has four main functions that ensure safety and peace of mind for outdoor pursuits.
• 999: Dispatches emergency services to your exact location using GPS co-ordinates.
• Help: Request help from selected friends and family through SMS text messages, or emails with a link to Google Maps which show your exact location.
• Check In: Allows you to let friends and family know that all is well, notify them of your location, or save waypoints so you can review your route at a later date.
• Track Progress: Allow friends and family to follow your progress in real time, or save waypoints to view your entire route at a later date using Google Maps.
Greg Tees, of SPOT Europe, said: "The product represents safety and responsibility outdoors and helps save lives. We have already had two confirmed rescues in the USA thanks to SPOT and we want to bring piece of mind and protection to people across the globe.”
