Interested in finding out how your body would cope at one of the highest points on earth?  Pop along to the Deansgate, Manchester store of mountain sports retailer Ellis Brigham and you can find out.

They are the first retailer in the UK to offer assessments using an ingenious POD (Pre-acclimatise on Demand) unit in a designated Altitude Centre within store. Sit back in the comfortable chair, plug in your own personal altitude mask and experience being in the mountains. The unique testing protocol will provide an instant, detailed report on how you respond to thin air found at altitude.

As well as the assessment, the POD can be booked for a series of training sessions in preparation for a trip. Prices start from £29.99 for a Hypoxic (reduced oxygen) assessment, and £99 for a 10 session Intermittent Hypoxic Exposure (IHE).

Mark Brigham, grandson of the founder, used a POD to train for charity hikes up Mont Blanc and Kilimanjaro and believes it was instrumental in ensuring his fitness levels were up to the task.

But it’s not just the vertically inclined who can benefit from such sessions. POD sessions can enhance performance, improve recovery, support general health, weight loss and wellbeing too.

In addition to the in-store POD, the store offers top brands and specialist advice on the very latest technical kit. It also houses an 8m tall real ice wall which can be booked for climbing sessions including kit and expert tuition.
