Readers of December's Trail magazine (out this week) can enjoy even more in-depth analyses of the latest products.

Not only will tech ed Graham Thompson put new gear through more rigorous tests than ever before, but some products will be put through lab conditions at the University of Leeds to give scientific evidence as to the effectiveness of each product.

GT tells us about the nature of the changes:

"One of our gear reviews will still feature a lot of products as before," he says. "But the other will consist of a smaller number of products to be featured in more depth.

"We'll choose the smaller number by tightening the requirements to compare very similar products.

"There will also be a change to our photography with all our shots being taken outdoors. This means readers can see the products in action.

"The lab testing of products is the first of its kind for a hill walking magazine."

In the December issue of Trail GT tests light weight mid-cut boots, which are a rapidly growing genre of footwear. He tells us what he thinks these boots are good for and what the drawbacks are.
