I walked up the 'Croagh' in 2006 on a cold December day. There was low cloud and snow in the air. The walk up was fairly challenging, but uninspiring, especially the last couple of hundred metres where the feet of countless thousands of pilgrims have caused serious erosion to the mountain, but this is Irelands most holy mountain and we should not criticise the collective devotion of the people.
On reaching the summit and sitting down for some 'snap' the cloud and snow cleared and the sun actually came out and I was presented with one of the most beautiful views I have seen. The bay with its scores of little islands in one direction and the mountains of the Joyce and Connemara national parks in the other.
I would recommend the walk just purely for this
