Facility information

Majestic Lochnagar’s cleaved-in-half profile is by far the most spellbinding example of several similarly built Cairngorm peaks: half arctic plateau, half vertical cliff. Lochnagar is consequently home to possibly the most stomach-wrenching photo-spots in Britain.
Best route from Spittal of Glenmuick (NO309851),
via Meikle Pap.

Came up from Spittal of Muick and went up Meikle pap first - views over Lochnagar spectacular - cloud was moving fast over the face and one minute it was clear, next it wasn't. Continued up and round and by the time i got to Cac Carn Beag there was any visibility. Came down past Glas Allt waterfall - great way to come - worth the effort.

There for the first time at the weekend - my first Munro - regrettably did not get to see the views as the weather was pretty poor on the plateau and the summit of Cac Carn Beag, but an amazing landscape nonetheless - will def be back in brighter weather.

You will never forget the first time you reach the crest of the crater and peer across the chasm. Truly spectacular. There's a reason why this is Prince Charles' favourite climb in scotland, and one he painted a lot. Tough in winter, majestic in summer.
