Finding our picture of Tom Buidhe on the site reminded me of the beautiful day last April when it was taken.
The hill on its own is unspectacular. However we approached from Glen Doll following Jock's Road and then the Whit Water to the foot of Tolmount. From there we went directly to the summit of Tolmount where we enjoyed lunch and a fantastic view down Glen Callater and of the Cairngorms beyond ( www.geograph.org.uk/photo/412363 ).
We then came around by Ca Whims and it was a gentle walk to the summit of Tom Buidhe, before descending to the White Water and back to Glen Doll.
A larger circuit starting in upper Glen Clova to Bachnagairn, climbing to Broad Cairn, Cairn Banoch, Fafernie and then Tolmount and Tom Buidhe would also be a long but easy walk.
Another possibility is from Mayar. The views from Earn Craigs and The Dounalt are spectacular. However, I have only taken this route when the peat was frozen and I guess it could be tricky in places during spring and summer.
Don't be put off by Tom Buidhe and its relative lack of excitement, the hills in this area are not difficult on their own but, the area as a whole is worth getting to know and in winter when you have it to yourself it is especially fine.
