Facility information

The Howgills are a compact mountain group in eastern Cumbria on the ‘other’ side of the M6 – seen close-up by millions of people passing north and south, but climbed by the merest fraction of them. Steep, dramatic and empty, the Howgills are a fine target for even serious mountain walkers – and this, their highest point, is a serene, centrally situated place to aim for.

Best route from Gaisgill in the north, via the silent, non-Yorkshire Dales National Park area of the Howgills.

The Howgills are great for just dropping off the rat race without having to bust a gut to get there. Can dash up in no time at all and wander around, great views and best of all see no one. On a nice early summer evening you can get going about 15.00 - have a good chug around and be back down in Sedbergh before the last call for food. A real calming experience with the lakes in the distance, Whernside to the south and the Pennines to the north and east. a real tonic for a city bound soul

Smaller than the Lakes, but so what???!!! I love the fact that they're so empty compared to the Lakes, which means that you can walk almost all day and hardly meet a soul, which can be a blessing at times. The Calf itself is great place for a view point and photo stop. If you get there in reasonable weather the views are as good as any in the Lakes, and if you get there in good weather, you can see across the Lakes, upto Scotland and across the Yorkshire Dales to the Pennines and almost to the East Coast. Blackpool Tower can sometimes be seen as well making it one of the best views in the country. Carry on from the Calf towards Black Force for a waterfall just as powerfull and spectacular as Cautley Spout, but not as well known. Some good wild camp spots to be had alongside the beck that Black Force feeds as well.
