Serious fell-walkers dismiss Catbells as a "hill" or a "short walk", suitable for novices. While this is all true, I heartily recommend it as one of the few fells where you can take your young family and have a truly unforgetable fell-walking experience. Even a 5-year old can get to the top to enjoy the incredible views over Dernwentwater. Wainwright's preferred route is best. Just remember to pack plenty of incentives for when the children get tired.

Catbells will always be our first Wainwright and probably have a special place in our hearts. The hill itself is distinctive enough to stand out amongst is surroundings and the views are incredible for the full 360 degrees. The walk is challenging for novicesbut attainable as the host of people on the top prove.

A pleasant series of hills overlooking Derwent Water. Usually packed out with people in the summer months. The paths are well established and Catbells presents no challenge for those navigationally challenged.

Nice little hill with excellent veiws over Derwent water and Keswick. Good for a short walk on it's own. Up there last summer in 70 mph winds and 550m cloud base. Pretty hairy to say the least. Carried on to High spy and back down Newlands beck to make a walk trek of it. Beautiful waterfall valley to walk down.

my mother decided to walk catbells after watching julia bradbury on wainwrght walks. HOwever the weather when we were there couldnt have been nmore different to the sunny carefree day the julia experienced. The winds walking towards the summit were hurrendous and we frequently had to sit down to stop ourselves from walking over the edge. On a calm day the walk would have been a lovely stroll will wonderfll view. The path is quite close to the edge however this might have been due to us almost being blow off several times. One family with a small child had to return back to the car as the walk was too dangerous in the weather conditions. The small scrambles on the fell are great and me and my family enjoyed teh walk, even in the wind!

Of course it's weeny and of course it's wildly busy, but Catbells is still worth a visit for the views alone. A ringside seat for the perennial splendours of Derwent Water. Just try to pick a quiet day, that's all. Taking the boat from Keswick is also a good idea as parking can be severely limited around Hawes End.
