Less a hill than a giant inland cliff where the geological gods took a cleaver to the moors and spliced the world in two. From the edge it’s easy to imagine how the first pioneers felt when they came to the lip of the Grand Canyon. The ground plunges away in a vertical dive, leaving views to the end of the earth. James Herriot chose it as his favourite view (although he spent his life looking at the business end of cows), and you can park at the top (Sutton Bank Visitor Centre) and follow the Cleveland Way to revel in the full impact of the altitude.

Sutton bank is definitely still in the North York Moors. Lovely walk on a clear day with views out across the Yorkshire Dales to the west and almost to York to the south.

Has Sutton Bank Moved? Last time I looked it was in the North York Moors, not the Pennines.
