There are as far as I am aware no public rights of way onto Mickle Fell. It is also not part of the Open Access Land under the CROW Act. so it is quite difficult to find a way up. The hill is also quite remot needing a long walk in. I visited it in 1976 when in the RAF on an excursion to map and recover wreckage of a World War 2 Stirling bomber that crashed ther in 1943. We recovered the rear gun turre which is now displayed in the Imperial War Museum at Duxford.
From what I remember, the ground is very boggy and difficult to walk, there being no tracks or paths. This also made navigation quite difficult although Maize Beck from Cauldron Snout is a good handrail. Crossing this is advisable further up towards the fell where it is narrower, although even this can be a bit dodgy when the beck is in spate. Care must be taken not to stray into any of the MOD Danger Areas as they are used for live firing excercises at times. The boundaries are usually well marked with signs.
