Facility information

Anciently thought to be the haunt of evil spirits, Cross Fell is the highest peak in England outside the Lake District, and it never ceases to surprise in its scale. Cross Fell itself is part of a high plateau, which proffers a fine wilderness feel and tough navigation. Listen for the local phenomenon called the Helm Wind: a channelled eastern gale given an eerie voice by the hillside gullies.

Best route: from Kirkland, a route heads up the west flank – an interesting mix of boulders and scree.

As the highest in this part of the pennines, it is well worth a visit! Good routes up both sides and taking in Knock Fell and the two Dun Fells. Plenty if wildlife to see, particularly the Rough Legged Buzzards that soar above the ridge on a good day.

been up cross fell twice.im sure there must be a view but am yet to see it.however the route from dufton to garrigill is a cracker and should be enjoyed over 2 days returning via the source of the tyne.be aware that , as far as i am aware , the george and dragon does not do b&b any more (very sad , because a good night could be had there). cross fell is not a place to be in poor visability unless your compass skills are up to scratch but with care and by following the many small cairns a safe desent can be made off the northern end.

Cracking hill in my local stomping ground, although for some reason i cant figure have only done it the once. Best thing to do is to make a 1 1/2 / 2 dayer out of it, by heading up the Landrover track from Garrigill to Greggs Hut and stopping overnight in Greggs hut before heading up onto the summit plateau the next day, or do as i did and go up by night!! Peacefull, secluded and great views from the top, even by night. Well worth a visit, jsut watch out for the bogs on the top!
