When visiting Dunkery Beacon on Exmoor it is easy to be put off but the two carparks half a mile from the summit. This does mean that the summit is full of people on a fine day. Dunkery is more than a crowded summit. To fully enjoy Duncary and indeed Exmoor the hill needs to be taken slowly and carefully. Start low down, maybe Lucombe or even Horner and walk up to Webbers post carpark. Here the hill and the moor land will open up. There are a couple of alternative here but the the west path will give wonderful views and a greater chance of the Red Deer. On reaching the summit it is not over. Continue along and return via east water a steep sided valley that before reaching the woodland will give wonderful sea views. A hidden gem.
