Would you travel from the other end of the country just to walk on Brown Clee? Probably not. Are there more interesting hills in the vicinity for a stroll? Possibly yes. Is it easy to escape all signs of human civilisation here? Tricky. But...if you live within an hour or so of Brown Clee is it a reliable alternative option for a good walk (anything from a couple of hours to a long day) with interesting wildlife, a bit of heritage and fine views on a clear day? Absolutely! Rosemarie is right: I did a lovely 10 mile circuit on Easter Sunday, a good day out. No, it's not Snowdonia, the Lakes or the Scottish Highlands, but if you live in the West Midlands those aren't all that handy for an impromptu day walk when the weather is good and you feel like stretching your legs.

We walked up exactly a year later - 19th February 2009 - approaching from the east, a gentle, varied 5-mile circular route. Turn your back on the masts (a necessity if we want 21st century communications) and there's a lovely rolling view to Cader Idris and the Brecon Beacons. We didn't experience any insects, perhaps because the last of the snow was still there. Glad we chose it.

I don't know if was the day that we did a route up here but we got eaten alive on the way up. There are certainly more beasties of various descriptions about in the England now in the summer. A friend had told me he was disappointed when he had got to the top and I had to concur. There is a large evidence of man there. It's a shame as some of my favourite localish places are nearby such as the Long Mynd, Lawley, Caer Caradoc and the Stiperstones. Needless to say I have never returned to Brown Clee Hill. It was however quiet but there was a reason.
