Facility information

One of the most impressive of Dartmoor’s tors (along with nearby Haytor Rocks), Hound Tor is also one of the most accessible, in Dartmoor terms at least. Its cracked, broken walls are said to resemble a pack of dogs. This is a scrambler’s heaven – in the middle of Devon.

Best route: park at SX739793

I am a little surprised at the appeal of Hound Tor (414m) 100 m from road. While there is nothing inherently wrong with it there are many tors better in every respect. If you want hight then try Yes Tor, or Great Links Tor. If you want scrambling then Sourton Tor, Leather Tor and Longaford Tor are all better. The real issue for me, however, is Hound Tor is 100m from a road on two sides making it one of the most accessible Tors on Dartmoor. This means that there is always loads of people there with you. It will be a very short walk and not what I would call a big day out. Dartmoor has so much to offer, it is a wild, harsh and exciting place. The tourist honey pot of Hound Tor does little to reflect this. An alt

This is a great little tor to scarpen those scambling techniques. I love this tor and took my wife there for the first time a few months ago. I had a great time scrambing over the granite practicing for the bigger hills. Also the car with the Hound of the Basketmeals at the bottom is great for a post walk tea. The writer of the Hound of the Baskervilles is supposed to have got some inspiration from this stack of rocks. I reckon it should have also been put in trails nights walks as the history and surrounding give it a real spooky atmosphere. Also Jays grave is very close and worth paying the little girl a visit. There’s always new flowers there and no one knows where they come from.
