Facility information

Shaped like the upturned prow of a boat, Yewbarrow is second only in recognisability to Great Gable, which it’s often mistaken for as both adorn the Lake District National Park logo. The summit is transcendent as a viewpoint – and running distance from Wasdale Head Inn, which pumps Yewbarrow Ale.

Best route: straight up the east ridge.

The initial sharp pull up from Overbeck bridge will certainly get you warmed up for the straightforward scramble up and onto the summit ridge - the views of Wasdale and its surrounding peaks can be awesome, it's a great place to linger for photos if the weather's behaving. Almost makes you forget that you have to come down! The descent down stirrup crag needs care. On a long day you could head on up to Red Pike and complete the rest of the Mosedale Horseshoe or for a shorte walk return to the bridge by the path along Yewbarrow's west flank. (Dorehead screes used to be a fun, quick way down to the WHI, but they're badly eroded and pretty treacherous now)
