tried this from eskdale, which it dominates, almost like a 'proper' mountain twice its size. our mapreader was suffering a little from a few many pints of jennings the night before so progress was slow at first especially as the rest of the party were a bit wary of wrestling the map from a bear with a sore head. it was blowing a gale on the top so no views for us. our descent was somewhat improvised, coming out near the bottom of the hardknott pass. by this point my old boots had finally given in to the rain so sloshed back up the road, only to find the woolpack closed for refurbishment :-(. but we laugh about it now!

A remote fell which is great at sunset, as there isn't much higher to the west, with great views over the Irish Sea and Morecombe Bay. There's also great views to the Scafell and Coniston Fells. My favourite approach is from the Dudden Valley, from Wallowbarrow, where there is car parking. As you emerge from High Wallowbarrow, the views of the Coniston fells are fantastic. Follow the path to Grassguards Gill, and then keep Dunnerdale Forest on your right hand side, for about 1km, before briefly going through the forest. When you emerge Harter Fell is to your right, and a path goes directly to the summit, twisting around a few of the crags to the summit. The high spot is to the north east of the trig point. There's a quick descent south east to Dunnerdale Forest, to allow the most to be made of the sunset. Follow the forest trails back to Grassguards and then Wallowbarrow.
